About

I am a long-time USA attorney involved in open source in many ways. I have been an active poster on the OSI License-Discuss and License-Approval lists for at least 15 years. I also was on the first License Proliferation Committee of the OSI in 2006.

I am an active speaker around the world on open source issues (primarily, but not exclusively, legal), and am an author of two chapters (relating to copyright and patent and open source) in the Oxford University Press book “Open Source Law, Policy & Practice, 2nd Edition.”

What areas of the Board’s work do you see yourself contributing towards?

As most of my efforts with OSI in the past have been around interpretation of the OSD and the process of analyzing submitted licenses for soundness and conformance with the OSD (as well as the OSAID), I believe I can be of particular help there.

I did run (unsuccessfully) for the Board in 2020, and had a campaign platform at that time that can be accessed here.

Some of the matters on that platform have been or are being addressed by OSI (for example, item 1), but I still feel that some of those are things that it would be helpful to address in the future.

What goals do you hope to achieve for OSI and the world of open source by serving on the Board of Directors?

See description above.
I also believe that it is important for OSI to continue to advocate for, and if necessary, clarify, the imporance of the OSD and the OSAID against those who have advocated that they are outdated, unrealistic, or insufficiently representative of what is the current state of “open.” I believe this is an important mission and am willing to be a vocal external advocate (as well as an internal voice when I believe that more clarity is needed on these issues).
